What is Pilates?
Pilates is an innovative system of mind-body exercises, originally known as "Contrology", that was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920's. Joseph Pilates began the development of his technique with a series of mat exercises, done in a specific order, to create fluidity and most importantly, control. Soon after, he invented several pieces of equipment, known today as the Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, Ladder Barrel, Arc Barrel and Spine Corrector. The equipment uses springs for resistance, versus regular weights. The adjustable resistance from the springs allow a wider range of motion and connected movement. Throughout the last 85 years, the Pilates world has grown dramatically and has advanced to the forefront of fitness, now widely included in basic physical therapy and physical training.
Regular practice will dramatically transform the way your body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength without excess bulk, creating a sleek, toned body with slender thighs and a flat abdomen. It will create a sense of body awareness, good posture and easy, graceful movement. Pilates will strengthen muscles to improve your overall health resulting in increased flexibility, agility and economy of motion, it can even help alleviate back pain.
Pilates focuses on engaging the mind with the body to create exercises that involve whole body movement. Every exercise is performed with attention to the breath, proper form and efficient movement patterns. The exercises are safe, low impact and appropriate for anyone ages 10 to 100.
Pilates focuses on learning to move better so the benefits are felt in everyday life. The Pilates system includes exercises for every part of the body and applications for every kind of activity. Over 10 million people are now practicing Pilates in the United States and the numbers are growing every year. Professional dancers have known the benefits of Pilates for decades. Top athletes use it for strength, flexibility, and injury prevention. Hollywood celebrities and supermodels use it to maintain beautiful physiques. A miracle? Not really. Developed from the rehabilitation techniques of Joseph Pilates, Pilates is a safe, sensible exercise system using the reformer and/or other resistance based equipment or a floor mat, that will help you look and feel your very best. No matter what your age or condition, it will work for you.
